winner

Erika LaPean

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments and I hope everyone got super spoiled yesterday!

congrats Erika! I can’t wait to meet your family.

Update!! I’m keeping the drawing open until midnight tonight and will be making the winning announcement early tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

Because moms rock I’m giving away a photo session for Mothers Day! All you have to do is leave a comment on this blog post and I will draw a name on Sunday at 5 pm. The session has to be used before the end of June. The package will include a disk of high res images as well as a 1-2 hour photo session with your family.

(here is a hint – you can only leave one comment per person, but you can gift this to your mom as well. For example – if four kids comment the better chance mom has to get the session)

mush

this one turns me into mush.

my love affair with cake

When I asked my daughter what kind of party she wanted she said, “Muppet Party Please” (in the cutest three year old voice ever). Hmmmm, you would think with the new movie released there would be more Muppet party paraphernalia. Not a chance. Angry Birds yes – but no Muppets! I picked up some old glasses from ebay, fringed some crepe paper, sewed a few party hats and made a few cakes. Volia, a Muppet party!!

The cakes – To make things easy I went to the local bakery and asked a simple request. I would like 2 dozen Muppet cupcakes please. Here is the picture that I showed them from an amazing bakery over seas. Not hard right? HA, she pretty much laughed in my face and said, “No!” I then decided to purchase a half dozen from her case and left feeling discouraged. Eating her cupcakes helped (they where amazing!) but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I could do this, I could make my daughter the best Muppet cupcakes ever. Then it started.

I pretty much instantly realized that I wouldn’t be able to make all the characters or cupcakes. I settled on four cakes and only two Muppets. All the recipes came from my favorite bakery in San Francisco, Miette. I have such a respect for how this woman bakes. Everything is in mise en place and the best of the best ingredients are always used. I only dream of perfection that this bakery creates. Just to give you and idea, the Miss Piggy cake took four days to complete and had 6 different recipes attached to it.

I became obsessed, and memories of getting up at 6 in the morning to put on my pink visor and polo to decorate cakes for Baskin Robbins came flooding back (it’s so true). It took a little over a week to complete the cakes. I did tests, I made samples, I gained about five pounds, and I don’t think that I will be baking another cake for a very long time. Was it worth it – absolutely. You’ll notice the chocolate dome cake has one piece out of it. In the morning before her party we woke her up with a piece of cake and a song. I will never forget the look on her face when she realized she was about to eat chocolate cake before getting out of bed. happy third birthday sweet thing
